To put it simply, dermal filler is a gel that is most often made of Hyaluronic acid and designed to create volume in the place where it is injected.

Dermal fillers can be used to alter your natural features, like enhance lips, reshape nose, and change jaw line or chin shape. It is also widely used  to substitute lost facial volume that is usually associated with aging.

Judiciously injected by an experienced provider, dermal filler treatments will deliver natural, long lasting and instant results.

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers

How do I choose the right dermal filler?

There are currently over 30 dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid licensed for sale in Canada. They defer by Brand name (depending on the manufacturing company) and you may have heard names such as Teoxane, Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero and some others. On top of that, each company produces a few types of dermal fillers for different indications and as such, with different properties. The ones designed for face volume replacement are thicker gels with more hyaluronic acid and are designed to withstand the weight of facial structures. These gels are usually placed deep over the bones. Products with intermediate thickness are good for filling deep lines and folds as well as for lip augmentation. Softer fillers are made for fine wrinkles, lip rejuvenation and under eye hollow correction. They can be suitable for more superficial injection.

You should trust your provider in choosing the best suitable dermal filler for your indications. Like an artist who knows where to use oil versus watercolour paint or clay versus plasticine, an experienced cosmetic injector knows the product and how to choose the best one.

How much filler do I need?

This is impossible to predict without seeing a particular face. Many times this question is straight forward if you are looking for nose reshaping, lip augmentation or undereye dark circle treatment. You always start with 1 syringe. However, those who want significant increase in lip size may require 2 syringes, though the best option is to spread it over 2 treatments 2-3 weeks apart.

If you are looking to correct a few areas of concern, you may require more syringes. Also keep in mind, the filler that is injected into cheeks cannot be used for under eyes, and left overs from under eyes treatment will not make much of a difference for deep folds. However, the fillers that are used for the correction of nasolabial folds can be injected into lips.

How do I prepare myself for dermal filler injections?

At Madison Cosmetic we believe in the natural result achieved through gradual changes and therefore never advocate large volumes in a single treatment.

Stop taking non-steroidal pain killers, St. John’s Wort, high dose Omega 3 fatty acids (Fish Oil), Vitamin E, Ginger, Ginkgo Biloba, and/or Ginseng 3-5 days prior to the procedure. This will minimize the risk of bruising. The same benefit is seen from avoiding alcohol intake for the same amount of time.

If you take Aspirin for a medical condition, consult your family doctor about whether it can be stopped. Our Dr. Iryna will also advise you during initial consultation if you can stop it. Usually, people with history of heart attack, coronary stents, strokes or TIA should continue taking Aspirin. The risk of bruises will be higher in this  case.

Eat a light meal prior to your appointment. If you are hungry during the procedure, there is a higher likelihood that you may feel dizzy. It is particularly important for patients who suffer from a phobia of needles or have experienced dizziness during dental procedures or blood tests.

Avoid salty food a day before and for a couple days after the procedure. This will help to minimize the risk of swelling at the site of the injection.

If you have history of cold sores and are planning on getting a lip injection you should take prophylactical antiviral medication prior to the procedure. It should be prescribed by your provider after reviewing your past medical history, medications and allergies.

What happens during the procedure?

Any treatment always starts with a complimentary physician consultation. Dr. Iryna Aleksandrova will listen your concern and goals, review your medical history, medications and previous aesthetic treatments.

Depending on the treatment chosen, you may need the application of a topical anaesthetic cream or ice pack to make the procedure more comfortable for you and decrease the risk of bruises.

After that, a product tailored for your particular facial features and needs will be injected using a thin needle or cannula. The latter is also a type of needle which is usually long and blunt and requires prior skin puncturing with a sharp needle. A cannula is used to decrease the risk of bruises and minimize the number of skin penetrations, but it is not suitable for all applications. Your doctor will choose the best needle option for your treatment.

What to avoid after a dermal filler injection?
short%2520logo%2520transparent%2520light

Generally, after the dermal filler treatment you should avoid massaging the area, hot yoga and sauna for a couple of weeks.

We also recommend sleeping on your back for a couple of days to allow the filler to stabilize and to avoid filler migration from heavy pressure on your face during sleep.

Avoidance of salty food and alcohol for a few days helps to minimize risk of swelling and bruises.

Delay any dental treatment for at least 2 weeks before and after the treatment in order to decrease the risk of infectious complications, since any dental work is associated with the temporary circulation of bacteria in your blood.

How much does the procedure cost?

Dermal filler injections are usually priced per syringe. Our price starts from 500$ per syringe and varies depending on the complexity of the treatment and product chosen. However, we offer discounts if you require a few syringes during the same treatment. The exact price will be discussed during your consultation prior to any procedure.
